Surrender: How to Live a Life of Ease
I am all about tools for creating your most radiant, fulfilling life. As human beings, we use tools in everything we do from how we work, to how we communicate in relationships, to how we prep dinner at night—find out what works most efficiently and then put it on repeat.
My most recent tool is a big one, and not for the faint of heart. It’s not an herb, a pill a treatment or even a special meditation. It’s surrender.
What is surrender? Surrender is the complete acceptance of what is.
Instead of fighting reality, you decide to let go of the illusion of control and simply accept. When you surrender, you feel a tremendous sense of relief, as if you’ve been fighting against yourself all along and finally stopped.
I’ve been working on my practice of surrender big time these past months. As an entrepreneur with a huge vision and mama who is pregnant with my second, my business goals have often contradicted with what’s best for my body.
Recently I had the dream of creating three amazing pre-recorded courses before my maternity leave. Ooooh I was so excited! My vision was clear. I knew the content and even had the titles. I wanted it bad.
The first week I sat down to record for three hours at seven months pregnant, I was naturally in physical pain. When I asked my husband what he thought of the course, he said “I love what you’re saying but you look really tense”.
He was right, I was hurting! I did prenatal yoga the next day before recording and tried again. Same thing. I was having a pain episode.
The third day I was too exhausted to even try. I was forced to surrender. I got in a bath and cried my eyes out. I walked out of the bath decided that from now on, I would have to listen to my body and trust the right time would present itself.
The next week it did. My pain episode subsided and I discovered that recording in small increments in the morning worked best for my body. I was thrilled with the result. I let go of my attachment to creating three courses before baby comes, and instead, felt proud that I had accomplished one.
Ask yourself, “What do I do when something doesn’t go as planned?.. Do I know when it’s time to surrender and pivot to a new way or do I stay attached to my original methods and keep pushing?” When we are attached and unwilling to shift, we not only put ourselves through unnecessary stress, but use vital energy resources as well. Pushing is exhausting. Surrendering is invigorating.
Living a life with surrender requires openness, flexibility and receptivity. It brings you into contact with the very nature of being, the truth of existence. From this place, ease and grace flow into your life like water, and the possibilities are endless.
